GMF is delighted to announce the addition of a new municipality from the Netherlands: Almelo.
Almelo is a municipality located in the eastern part of the Netherlands, in the Twente region, and has been hosting Urenco‘s enrichment facility since 1977. Urenco Nederland is unique within the Urenco group as it combines uranium enrichment with the use of advanced centrifuge technology to produce a wide range of stable isotopes for medical, industrial and research applications. Nuclear medicines derived from these stable isotopes contribute to more than 2 milion patient treatments each year worldwide, highlighting the municipality’s important role in global health care supply chains.
Beyond its nuclear activities, Almelo is an active medium-sized municipality with a strong focus on innovation, regional development, and dialogue between industry, authorities, and local communities, values that closely align with GMF’s mission.
“We are very pleased to welcome Almelo to GMF,” said Gerben Dijksterhuis, President of GMF. “Their long-standing experience as a nuclear host community and their involvement in both energy-related and medical isotope activities will be a valuable addition to our network.”
With this new membership, GMF continues to expand its reach and strengthen its role as a platform for municipalities to exchange knowledge, engage stakeholders, and represent the interests of nuclear host communities at the European and international levels.
We look forward to working closely with our new Dutch partner and to Almelo’s active contribution to upcoming GMF activities.
